Don't let hidden forces hold you back: The power of inertia

The hardest thing about action is starting. We spend so much time thinking about what we will do and then get frustrated when nothing happens because we aren’t taking action.

We ruminate about doing something else and then time passes and nothing changes.

Everything is against you until you realize that it is not. Nothing needs to be perfect to begin; it is actually best if it isn’t. Because then, things simply continue getting better.

Prove to yourself that you can begin that one thing. Then focus on continuing. Doing something once is not the goal; it is to establish the routine or schedule that you need to keep working off of routine and build off of that momentum.

An object in motion stays in motion. So just start, and keep going.

All paths lead somewhere

This moment is preparing you for something amazing to happen next.

You can look back and connect the dots to see how random moments have helped you, but only after that moment has passed and you move on to something else.

In his book, 11 Rings, Phill Jackson talks about the philosophies that guided him throughout his coaching career. One (of many) stand out, but this in particular is applicable to the concept of starting something new.

“The most we can hope for is to create the best possible conditions for success, then let go of the outcome. The ride is a lot more fun that way.”

Instead of dwelling in the past or leaping towards the future, remembering that the present moment is the only thing we have can help take the fear out of executing or working towards a goal.

It takes a mix of confidence, and clarity to stand in each moment no matter how scary, exhilarating, or challenging, and stay grounded in the belief that this too is a dot along your path. This moment will connect you to another moment and lead you to where you are destined to go. Just like a map on the road, there are high points and low; but all are elements of the journey ahead.

Every path leads somewhere, and it’s likely in your best interest to keep moving forward.
